10 Soc. Studies Essential Learnings
1. Specialization of Labour - students will understand the various divisions of labour and how they affect
the success of civilizations (pottery, tool-making, hunter/gatherers).
WE LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT LABOURS IN CIVILIZATIONS, THE ROLE THEY PLAY IN ALLOW THE
CIVILIZATIONS TO EXIST AND THRIVE.
2. Economics - students will be able to understand and explain how each civilization met their needs (i.e.
trade, currency, labour, economy).
WE LOOK AT HOW CIVILIZATIONS THRIVED BECAUSE OF GEOGRAPHY AND HOW IT ALLOWED THEIR
ECONOMY TO SUCCEED WITH TRADE. HOW SOME AREAS BECAME ECONOMIC CENTRES. WE LOOK AT
THE STAPLE INDUSTRIES IN ECONOMIES.
3. Defining Moments - students will be able to identify and understand the significance of key historic
events of ancient history.
WE LOOK AT MAJOR WARS, EMPIRES, AND LEADERS. HOW THE WORLD HAS CHANGED OVER TIME.
WHY SOME AREAS WERE, AND ARE STILL, IN STATES OF WAR.

Technology - students will be able to explain the key technological and innovation achievements of the
ancient world.
WE LOOK AT SOME OF THE ADVANCEMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY THE EARLY CIVILIZATIONS. WE LOOK AT
SOME THAT ARE STILL USED TODAY IN SOME FORM.

Art & Architecture - students will understand and recognize the various architectural and artistic
achievements of specific ancient civilizations.
WE LOOK AT GREEK AND ROMAN ARCHITECTURE, DISCUSS MATERIALS USED, PURPOSE OF, SOME
TECHNIQUES USED TO MAKE UP FOR LACK OF TECHNOLOGY. AREAS WHERE WE SEE ARCHITECTURE
USED TODAY AND ART TODAY. ART USED TO TELL STORIES AND HONOUR GODS/GODDESSES.

Communication - students will understand the evolution of writing and language.
WE LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT ALPHABETS OF GREECE AND ROMAN AND LINK THEM TO OUR ALPHABETS.
WE LOOK AT THE EARLY WRITINGS (CUNEIFORM) AND NON WRITTEN LANGUAGE (FRESCOS AND
MOSAICS). HAVE STUDENTS CREAT THEIR OWN.
7. Social Structure - students will be able to identify and understand the following; social class, gender
roles, social behaviours and cultural norms.
WE LOOK AT WHO HAD POWER IN SOCIETIES, WHO HAD NO VOICE. ROLES OF MALES/FEMALES. HOW
DIFFERENT CITY-STATES HAD DIFFERENT GENDER VIEWS AND BELIEFS. DO SIMILAR BELIEFS EXIST
TODAY?
8. Politics / Bureaucracy - students will understand the various systems of government, the types of
leadership, the evolution of government and the influence of specific individuals (i.e. oligarchy,
democracy, republic).
WE STUDY THE POLITICS OF GREECE AND ROME. WE STUDY WHY PARTICULAR SYSTEMS WERE
CHOSEN OVER OTHERS. WE COMPARE AND CONTRAST THOSE SYSTEMS TO DEMOCRATIC AND
AUTHORITARIAN SYSTEMS OF TODAY.
9. Religion - students will understand the importance and influence of religion on each civilization (i.e.
monotheism, polytheism, mythology, Christianity).
WE WILL STUDY THE BELIEFS OF GREEK AND ROMAN MYTHOLOGY, COMPARE/CONTRAST THEM TO
PRESENT DAY MAINSTREAM RELIGIONS. HOW THEY INFLUENCED PEOPLE’S LIVES. (FESTIVALS,
OFFERINGS) WHY CHRISITIANITY AND JUDAISM GAINED SUPPORT OVER TRADITIONAL BELIEFS.
10. Geography - students will be able to identify the major geographical concepts per region (i.e. political,
cities, landscape, bodies of water, climate).
DONE THROUGH STUDENT CREATED MAPS, AND STUDYING MAPS TO MAKE INFERENCES AROUND HOW
THE GEOGRAPHY INFLUENCED AND IMPACTED CIVILIZATIONS.
