Classical Civilizations Group Project
AP World History
UNIT 2: Organization and Reorganization of Human Societies, c. 600 B.C.E. to c. 600 C.E.
Purpose: Is to teach the three classical civilization areas (Asia, Mediterranean, India, & trade routes). These
civilizations affected large numbers of people and had a lasting impact on World History. The AP World History
exam almost always has one essay question dealing with these civilizations.
Directions: In groups of 4-5 students you are to teach the topic given to you. You are to teach all of the terms
and concepts on your topic sheet. You are going to create a 25-40 minute presentation with your topic
information. You are to make this a fun and entertaining presentation that gets the class involved in what you are
teaching. Bring in food, show short video clips, use PowerPoint, act out a play, create a poster, play games, or all
of the above. You are to use the SPRITE model to present your information to the class. You must answer each
section of the SPRITE chart in your presentation completely and accurately.
Required Products:
1. Study guide that complete covers everything someone would need to know about your topic.
2. Technology component – someone way to present your information to the class. PowerPoint,
photostory, blog, website, play, poster, game, or something else. You want your technology component
to be interactive and reusable. This is an AP class I expect you to be creative and involved.
Grading Rubric: I am going to keep the rubric fairly simple for this one. The key to this whole project is to get the
class involved at the same time that you are teaching the information. You have 25-40 minutes to entertain me
and the class.
1. Time (10) - for every 10 second over or under the time limit you will loose 1 point. Up to the max of 10.
2. Study guide (40) – Make sure you cover everything that needs to be covered for your topic. I give you
everything that is important about your topic, you just have to organize it in an effective way so that
students can learn the material. Create timelines, connect the terms together, make a graphic organizer
with the info on it. If all you do is list the terms and then write a definition then you will not get credit for
this part of the assignment. This should not be a ten page document. It should be as short as possible to
cover the information.
3. Presentation (50) – Did you attempt to make your presentation entertaining, were you creative in your
presentation? Was the class involved or were they all sleeping as you did your presentation? Did you do
something that was different from the other groups? Did you do something other than stand in front of
the room and talk? Did you have some kind of technology component in your presentation? I am allowed
to be boring you are not. 
You do not have to present everything dealing with your topic. You can put all the information in the study guide
and students can read it on their own time. What you want to do is present the most important information to
the class. Let them experience the culture, religion, or politics of the civilization. CONNECT YOUR CIVILIZITION
TO THE WORLD. HOW DID THEY AFFECT WORLD HISTORY OR CHANGE THE COURSE OF HISTORY. THINK
BROAD CONNECTIONS.
