Aim: How does the nervous system send messages? Which is which? Stimulus is the being struck with the hammer. • Response: the knee jerk reflex • Do you want to win a Dollar? I will drop a dollar bill between your open fingers. If you are able to catch the dollar, it is yours. Why is our nervous system so fast? The message is electrical Types of Neurons Sensory Motor Neurons Neurons Interneurons Sensory Neurons Sensory Neuron: receives stimulus from the environment and carry them to the brainFound and spinal cord. in Receptors!! Ex. Eyes Ears Nose Toungue Skin Motor Neurons Motor Neuron: carry information from the brain or spinal cord to muscles or glands (effectors). * A motor neuron makes something move. Interneurons They are found in the brain or spinal cord (CNS), “BETWEEN” sensory and motor neurons. They INTERPRET message! Pathway Stimulus Effector Response Receptor Sensory Neuron Motor Neuron Interneuron Reflexes A REFLEX is an automatic response to a certain stimulus (you have NO control over it). Ex: Blinking Sneezing Coughing Breathing Heartbeat Knee-jerk Dilation of Pupil Reflex Arc Message travel to the spinal cord and back to muscles. Movement occurs without the use of the brain. The brain gets the message a split second after the response. How are signals transmitted from neuron to neuron? SYNAPSE Synapse- the gap (space) an impulse must cross to send its message to the next neuron What happens at the synapse? The electrical signal reaches the terminal branches and causes the release of a chemical messenger called a Neurotransmitter. Receptors Are specific! Receptors on the next neuron receive the neurotransmitter! Very Specific!!!!!!!!!!
