Notes—Plant Processes
Name:
Respiration1.
All living organisms must use oxygen to break down
food for energy. This process is called respiration.
2.
Plants take in oxygen from their stomata and combine it
with the sugar they have made during photosynthesis. They
break down the food for energy to grow.
Photosynthesis is sort of the opposite of respiration:
Photosynthesis (needs energy): carbon dioxide and
water combine to make sugar and oxygen.
Respiration (produces energy): sugar and oxygen
combine to make carbon dioxide and water.
Transpiration1.
Plants lose water through the stomata in their leaves.
2.
It can cause a plant to wilt or die.
3.
Plants can control water loss by using the guard cells to
close the stomata.
4.
Remember: transpiration sounds like perspiration; I call
transpiration “plant sweat.”
