WORKSHEET
(level I)
Chapter 2.1
1. Explain The consequences of using DDT to control malaria in Borneo.
2. Explain the difference between biotic factors and Abiotic factors. How do these factors interact in an
ecosystem.
3. Describe the difference between an organism and a species.
4. What is the difference between a species and a population?
5. describe the difference between a population and a communitity
6. Chose an animal and describe that animal’s habitat and that animals niche. (you cannot use a lion)
Chapter 2.2
7. Explain the 5 major types of species interactions and give examples of each. (examples cannot be any
that were given in the textbook)
8. Explain the difference between mutualism and parasitism.
Chapter 2.3
9. In your own words, describe natural selection.
10. in you own words, describe evolution
11. What is the difference between natural selection and evolution?
12. describe the concept of coevolution.
(level II)
1. describe how life depends on the sun
2. What is the difference between a consumer and a producer?
3. how is the deep-ocean ecosystem and exception to the rule.
4. explain the difference between an herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, and decomposer. Give an example
of each
5. describe the process of cellular respiration and photosynthesis. (include the equations).
6. explain the difference between a food chain and a food web.
7. explain how energy is transferred in a food web/chain.
8. describe the directions of the arrows in a food web
9. Look at figure 3-7. What is the feeding relationships does the crab eater seal have?
10. explain the difference between producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, and tertiary
consumers.
11. describe the transfer of energy through each trophic level of the energy pyramid.

Answer all questions. Oral defense for level I will concentrate on questions 1-12. Oral defense for level II
will concentrate on questions 13-22.
1. what is the branch of biology that is devoted to the study of organisms in their environment?
2. how is each part of the environment interdependent on every other part?
3. what is defined as all the interactions of a group of organisms living in a certain area with one another
and with their physical environment?
4. what are the nonliving things in an ecosystem?
5 what are the living things in an ecosystem.
6. what is the most important abiotic feature in a swamp
7. list the community of organisms in a swamp ecosystem
8. what is a group of the same species of organism that shares the same environment.
9. what are organisms that are able to interbreed and produce fertile offspring?
10. what happens to the population of rodents and insects when ravens are killed off?
11. this term describes a particular place in which an organism lives
12. what term is used for the uniqe role an organism plays in its community or environment.
13. What do ecologists call it when matter and energy flow through ecosystems as organisms feed on
one another?
14. what is the first link in the food chain?
15. what are organisms that eat the food producers? Give an example
16. what is an example of a second-order consumer?
17. what order consumer eat second order consumers? Give an example
18. what are organisms such as fungi, protists, and certain bacteria?
19. these are the interconnected food chains that can exist in an ecosystem.
20. as energy is passed from producers to consumers, how is usable chemical energy lost to the
environment?
21. what kind of diagram do ecologists use to depict the flow of energy through a food chain?
22. how does a pyramid demonstrate how in a food chain large populations of certain organisms are
needed to support very small populations of other organisms.
Art:
Level I
Abiotic Vs. biotic factors
Create 2 columns on a sheet of paper. Label one column abiotic factors and the other biotic factors.
Draw or cut out pictures and place them in the appropriate column. There must be at least 10 items in
each column.
If you are drawing the items, the drawings must be nice. If you cannot draw nicely, then you will have to
cut out pictures from a magazine.
Level II (both parts must be done)
1st:
Cut out the pictures given and glue them on to a poster board (provided) to create an energy pyramid.
Label the decomposers, producers, primary trophic level, secondary trophic level, and tertiary trophic
level.
2nd:
Cut out the pictures given and create a food web. There is a handout that states what each animal eats.
Use a marker to draw the arrows.
Lab (level I)
Go to the following websit:
http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0078778066/student_view0/chapter6/virtual_lab.html
complete the virtual lab
answer the journal questions and print to turn in.
