Ecosystems
Lesson 1: What are ecosystems? (p. 232- 237)
VOCABULARY
ecosystem- all the living and nonliving things in an environment and the many
ways they interact
habitat- area or place where an organism lives in an ecosystem
population- all members of one species that live within an area of an
ecosystem




NOTES
Parts of an Ecosystem (p.233)
A system is made up of parts that interact with each other.
An ecosystem may be large, like an ocean, or small, like a park.
Animals and plants are living parts of an ecosystem.
The nonliving parts of an ecosystem include air, water, soil, sunlight,
and landforms.
What is an example of an ecosystem in your community?
Examples of ecosystems in our community are ponds, woods, bayous, and gardens.




Kinds of Ecosystems (p. 234- 235)
Many factors, such as soil and climate, make ecosystems different.
The kinds of plants and animals that live in an area depend on soil
and climate.
In any environment, some kinds of plants and animals survive better
than others.
Examples of different ecosystems in North America:
 tundra
 rainforest
 desert
 grassland
 wetlands
Facts about Ecosystems in North America:
Tundra:
 located in northern North America
 cold region
 ground beneath surface frozen year round
 some grasses but no trees
 Examples of animals- arctic fox and caribou

Ecosystems
Rain Forests:
 located in Pacific Northwest (Not all rainforests are tropical.)
 mild and rainy climate
 Examples of organisms- spotted owls, banana slugs, Douglas fir trees
Desert:
 located in southwest North America
 known as driest ecosystem
 Living organisms must adapt to limited water supply.
 Examples of organisms- cacti, coyotes, lizards
Grassland:
 located in central North America
 covered with grasses
 receive medium amount of rain
 Examples of animals- grasshoppers, prairie chickens, bison
Wetlands:
 located in southeast North America
 ground covered with water at least part of year
 Examples of organisms- water lilies, cypress trees, insects, raccoons,
alligators
In what type of climate would large green leaves survive best? Why?
Large green leaves would best survive in a wet climate because they need
lots of water to survive.
What is one adaptation that would help an organism survive in a desert
ecosystem? One adaptation that would help an organism survive in a desert
ecosystem is the ability to store water.
Why would you not be likely to find water lilies in the Alaskan Tundra? You
would not be likely to find water lilies in the Alaskan Tundra because the
ground beneath the surface is frozen all year. Water lilies would not be able
to get the water they need to grow.
How are the needs of the plants in the wetlands and rain forest similar? The
needs of the plants in the wetlands and rain forest are similar because they
both need a large amount of water to grow.

Living Things within Their Ecosystems (p. 236)
You can think of a habitat as an address because it is where an
organism lives.
A habitat contains all the living and nonliving things that an organism
needs to survive.
There are many populations found within an ecosystem.
A population may be large or small.
Structures for Survival (p. 237)
Many organisms have special structures that help them survive in
their habitats.
o Examples:
 wings for flying
 webbed feet for swimming
 fur for warmth
