Unit 11: Sports Nutrition
Activity 7 – Now that’s hard to stomach!
The human body is an amazing thing…..and the way it digests, absorbs and
excretes nutrients from food is an excellent example.
As an introduction to the digestive system have a go at labeling the diagram in task
1 and then matching the functions to the components in task 2.
We will use this activity to further explore the digestive system in class.
Task 1 – The Digestive System
Label the diagram using the following parts of the digestive system
SOURCE:
COLON
LIVER
RECTUM
STOMACH
OESOPHAGUS
PANCREAS
GALL BLADDER

Function
A highly acidic environment, able to break down large molecules (such
as from food) to smaller ones so that they can eventually be absorbed
from the small intestine
Produces bile, an alkaline compound which aids in digestion
Produces enzymes that break down digestible foods
Where the most chemical digestion takes place - the part of the gut
between the stomach and the large intestine
The muscular tube through which food passes from the pharynx to the
stomach
Excretes a variety of waste products produced by metabolism
Largely responsible for the breakdown of food in the small intestine
A strong acidic liquid. Its main components are digestive enzymes
The first portion of the alimentary canal that receives food and begins
digestion by mechanically breaking up the solid food particles into
smaller pieces and mixing them with saliva.
The last part of the digestive system: its function is to absorb the
remaining water from indigestible food matter, store this unusable food
matter (wastes) and then eliminate the wastes from the body.
Stores about 50 ml of bile, which is released when food containing fat
enters the digestive tract
mainly proteins, that increase the rates of chemical reactions in the
body
