Gluep
Honors Ninth Grade Science
Introduction: The interior of the Earth is complex. While it is made
of 3 major layers, some of these layers can be subdivided or grouped into
regions. The mantle of the Earth, and more specifically the asthenosphere, is a
unique substance. Its composition is different from that of any other layer of
the Earth. It has unique tendencies and properties. Gluep is a substance that
closely resembles the properties and tendencies of the Earth’s
mantle/asthenosphere.
Problem:
Objective:
How can we simulate the actions of the mantle?
To determine the approximate consistency of the mantle/asthenosphere
Guiding Question:
Hypothesis: (if-then statement)
Group Claim (conclusion):
Evidence:
Justification of the evidence:
Procedure:
1. Obtain your sample of Gluep. Perform several tests on the substance to
see how it behaves. You can try poking quickly, poking slowly, shaping,
pouring, etc.
2. Record your observations, indicating if the substance was more solid-like
or liquid-like.
Data:

Observations
Solid or
Liquid?
Analysis questions:
Analysis questions:
1.
What specific layers are contained in the asthenosphere?
2.
In what way(s) can gluep be used to model the material that makes up
the asthenosphere?
3.
In what way(s) is the gluep different from the asthenosphere?
4.
What role does the density of the asthenosphere have on how it
functions?
5.
Why is the asthenosphere considered to be “plastic” and not solid or
liquid?
6.
How might the “plastic” properties of the mantle affect the crust?
Conclusion: THIS WILL BE COLLECTED FOR A GRADE:
What was learned about the layers that make up Earth’s interior? How are the 3 major regions
of Earth’s interior divided? What were the different properties that the gluep possessed and
how are these properties related to the Earth’s interior? What is meant by the idea that the
mantle/asthenosphere is “plastic”. Why is it necessary to consider the properties of the
mantle/asthenosphere when observing geologic phenomenon of the Earth’s crust?
