Renaissance began in a city in northern Italy called Florence. Our
World Textbook tells us that the Renaissance began in this city because it
was very wealthy. Florence produced many high quality goods like woolen
cloth. This city also gained wealth through trading and banking. Banks are
the revival of trade, required a better system of borrowing and lending
large sums of money. The Medici Archive Project told us that some goods
traded where: gold buttons, silk fabrics of gold, silver, three horses, custom
jewelry, wool, sugar, leather, and cloth. The gold buttons were from Lyon,
silk fabric and silver were from Milan, the horses were from Rome, custom
jewelry were also from Milan, and the wool sugar and leather were from
India. Other places they traded with were Siena, Centuriona, Fionreza, and
Zante.
According to Our World the long-term effect on explorers seeking
new sea routes was that regions became more closely linked between
trade and communication. This led to further exploration and conquest.
Italy hired Christopher Columbus. His job was to plan a rout to reach Asia.
Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian explorer. Vespucci explored the continent
now known as America. This exploration helped to expand our knowledge
of the world through maps because if you were going to Asia from Spain,
going west, you wouldn’t know that there is a huge continent blocking your
way. Also, in America, people could of lived there and have a farm. Prince
Henry of Portugal was trying to find a sea route to the riches of Africa and
Asia. He tried to accomplish this through education and invention by
building a school for the most skillful sailors, mapmakers, and shipbuilders.
There they worked, trying to find a way to achieve the prince’s goal. They
updated the compass and the map. Also, they developed a ship called a
caravel. The caravel was an improvement to older styles of ships, because
it could sail in any direction. Older ships had to use the wind to get
around. The English explorers want to find a Northwest Passage to Asia.
They wanted to find a Northwest Passage to Asia, because Asia had great
wealth. The first Italian sailor/ European to sail into what is present-day
New York harbor was Giovanni de Verrazano. French hired Jacques
Cartier that way France could claim a part of North America or have what
they called a "foothold" on the land. According to Our World, the fallowing
explorers were from Portugal. Dias discovered a sea route from Europe to
Asia. Gama accomplished in 1502, bringing warships to India to conquer
the rich port cities of Portugal.
Renaissance was also a time for science. Our world states that
Galileo was a scientist in Renaissance time. He improved the Dutch
telescope. He sold his design to the navy of Venice. This invention helped
sailors to see if enemy ships are approaching or if land was ahead. This
invention also helped shipping and trade because people would want
telescopes, so they would trade something really good for it in exchange.
Our World also tells us that the crusades were when Pope Urban II
called for a war to capture the Jerusalem and nearby lands where Jews
had lived, this happened in 1095. This gave people the idea that they can
survive by trading with the East, like silks and spices. The English

that craftsmen would join, it was almost as hard to enter and strict as
knights. A guild promotes the trade of goods, by building quality products,
because all of the stages of training they must go through and they will
then make better products and trading will be better.
During the time period of the Renaissance, the Medieval
Sourcebook states that the town of Florence was the center of trade,
because they have a wide variety of craftsmen that make high quality
goods to trade with. For example, makers of clothing and accessories may
trade purses, belts, hats/caps, yarn, old clothes, or linen. Also, a barrel
maker may want to trade barrels [to hold foods, drinks, and other things in
for wheat.
