Study Guide – Work, Power & Energy
1. Be able to calculate work, power, and energy in any type of word
problem. YOU DO NOT NEED TO MEMORIZE THE FORMULAS!!!
2. Make sure you know the units:
a. mass – kg
b. weight- Newtons
c. gravity – 9.8 m/s2
d. energy (KE & PE) – Joules
e. work – Joules
f. power – Watts
g. force – Newtons
3. Know the states of energy (Kinetic & Potential) and the forms of
energy:
a. thermal
b. chemical
c. mechanical
d. electromagnetic (light)
e. nuclear
4. Be able to give an example of energy conversion.
5. Be able to describe how energy is converted from kinetic to potential
in a pendulum.
6. What is elastic potential energy? Can you give examples?
7. Law of Conservation of Energy.
8. How is power influenced by time?
9. Describe an instance where you can put a force on an object, but no
work is done.
Solve the following problems:
10. A car engine exerts a force of 5000 N to move the car 186 meters in
9.4 seconds. Calculate the power.
11. A 2120 newton roller coaster is at the top of a hill ready to drop. The
hill is 119 meters tall, find the potential energy of the car.
12. If Doug pushes a chair 67 meters with a force of 19 newtons, how
much work did he do?
13. A motorcycle, a car, and a bus are all traveling at the same velocity,
which one has a greater kinetic energy? Explain your answer.
