Preparation
Purpose/Rationale:
 For students to understand that the Shang Dynasty was a myth until
1928 when it was discovered by archeologists in Anyang
 Archeologists conclusions about Shang Dynasty based on the articles
they found.
 The history of Han Dynasty
Curriculum framing/essential question:
 How did the Shang Dynasty form?
 What was Shang’s Dynasties government and social class like?
 What makes Shang’s burrial rituals unique or different then most.
District Standards:
 SS.08.SA.03 Examine a controversial event, issue, or problem from more than
one perspective.
 SS.08.SA.04 Examine the various characteristics, causes, and effects of an
even, issue, or problem.
Prior Knowledge/Background Information:
 To have an idea that China has had many different Dynasties throughout
hundreds of years.
Learning Objectives:
 For students to understand that the Shang Dynasty was a myth until 1928
when it was discovered by archeologists in Anyang
 Archeologist’s interpretation of Shang Dynasty’s culture and way of life based
on the articles they found.
Materials/Resources Needed:
 Print out of “animal” clues
 Print out of the fill in the blank worksheet
Technology:
 Smart board to play Power Point and Utube Video

Procedures:
Hook or Anticipatory Set:
 Hide a couple of objects/pictures around the room that indicate the past
presence of someone (ex: a bear=bear paws, honey, salmon) and have a note
on each groups table that says “The myth is: there might have been a big
animal in the room last night” Have the students get up and look around for
clues of who it might be. After they find all the clues discuss which animal it
might have been and why they think that. (15-20 min)

Body of the lesson: (transitions, activities, technology, monitoring of assessments,
review)
 Pass out the fill in the blank worksheet that they’ll fill in as I present the power
point presentation.
 Go through the Power point presentation highlighting all the important facts of
Shang Dynasty (20-30 min)
 Show the youtube video on Shang Dynasties (20-30 min)

Talk about the video ( 7 min)
Have the students write in their China Journals listing 3 facts they learned
about the Shang Dynasty (7 min)
Extensions/Differentiations:
 The Tag students could do some research ahead of time on the social class or
government of Shang Dynasty and then present it to class.
 For the struggling students have a visual representation of the history and
culture of the Shang Dynasty.

 Filling in the worksheet during Power Point presentation
 Writing in the China Journals
