Name ____________________________________________________ Period ________ Date ___________________ Art of the Renaissance Artists of the 1300s-1600s in Europe began to challenge the status quo of the art world. Later, this time period became known as the Renaissance—or “rebirth.” Characteristics of renaissance art are: 1. References to classical learning and art. Renaissance artists looked to the stories and art of Ancient Greece and Rome for inspiration. 2. Realistic. Distant objects are shown smaller than close ones. Anatomy and math were used to make subjects more realistic. 3. Religion. Artists of the Renaissance continued to be inspired by religion. 4. Focus on the individual. Renaissance artists portrayed the importance of individuals. Often the individuals shown were the ones paying for the art. 5. Beauty. Artists wanted to show the natural beauty of people and things. ****************************************************************************** On the next page are listed pieces of art that exemplify the renaissance. (Exemplify means they are great examples.) Each of you have been assigned one. How does your assigned piece of art illustrate the characteristics of the renaissance art? Investigate online. (helpful links at our new class website: http://bit.ly/slcse ) Then do the following: 1. Print out a color version of the piece of art (printer 3522). Make it as big as it can be and still fit on 8.5x11inch piece of paper. 2. Type out a 1 page answer to the question: How does ___(your piece of art)____ illustrate characteristics of renaissance art? A few hints: a. Start with a paragraph explaining the basic background of the art. Who created it? When? Why? How? Where? b. Factually describe what is seen in the artwork. You can look up how big it is in real life, who/what is in the piece, what is happening in the piece. c. Explain which characteristics of renaissance art are seen in your piece. This will require you to explain your art in detail and potentially explain any story behind the piece. For example, if there is a reference to a Greek myth, you’ll need to explain the Greek myth and explain which parts of the painting/sculpture are a reference to it. If you have a painting showing The Last Supper, you’ll need to find out what “The Last Supper” actually was—before it was painted!
