DNA Jobs: Replication and Protein Coding Steps 1) Make a double stranded DNA molecule that is at least 12 base pairs long using the paper provided. Draw your molecule here using letters to represent each base pair. 2) Share base pairs with another student in your group so that you can demonstrate replication: Draw a picture of how this strand of DNA would make a copy of itself. 3) Make one long DNA out of two of your models (24 base pairs). Now make an mRNA molecule that matches one side of your shared DNA. Draw it along with the DNA strand it is from in the space below. DNA: mRNA: 4) Describe the transcription process in words. 5) You should be able to describe how this process happens verbally. You will need to make an enzyme to help you do this. When you’re ready, describe the process to one of the teachers and have them initial here________. 6) Now the translation process happens. What are the steps for this process? 7) What are the codons in your mRNA? List them and the amino acid they code for below. Use the example to show how to do this. Example:CCU- Proline 8) Write down the final order of amino acids used to make your protein. 9) How many different combinations of mRNA bases would result in a proline amino acid? 10) Describe how the transcription process and translation process are different. Include where they take place in the cell. Explain how this would change for a plant cell or bacterial cell. 11) Assume a virus needed the following sequence of amino acids: Proline-Alanine-Leucine-Valine-Glutamine a. What RNA sequence would lead to those amino acids? b. What DNA sequence would lead to those amino acids? c. What RNA sequence would lead to those amino acids if your virus was a retrovirus? d. Explain which of the above viruses would be most likely to change the host DNA.
