Different Views of Reconstruction
President Abraham Lincoln
Wanted the South
to rejoin the Union
quickly and easily
“with malice
towards none,
with charity for all,
let us bind up the
nation’s wounds”
Confederate General Robert E. Lee
supported
President Andrew
Johnson’s Plan
Frederick Douglass
spoke for the
rights of AfricanAmericans
wanted
reconciliation
which meant he
wanted to make
peaceful and
friendly
relations between
the North and
South
Lincoln’s 10% Plan
1. 10% of voters
swore an oath to
the United States
2. offered amnesty
(or pardons) for
Confederates
3. must honor
emancipation, or
the freeing, of the
slaves
asked angry
Southerners to
stop fighting and
accept rejoining
the Union
became President
of Washington
College
(Washington and
Lee University)
worked for the
passage of the
14th Amendment
grants citizenship
for all persons
born in the US.
13th Amendment
which bans slavery
And
equal protection
of the law…laws
apply equally to
everyone
Pardon=excused
from a crime
committed
15th Amendment
Guarantees voting
citizens the right to
vote
….except
women….sorry
ladies!!!!!
President Andrew Johnson
The Radical Republicans
President Rutherford B. Hayes
Much like Lincoln,
Johnson did not
want to punish the
South
Wanted to punish
the South for
causing the Civil
War and ignoring
the rights of
African-Americans
Their plan was
known as Radical
Reconstruction
and was put into
effect
Made a deal with
southern
Democrats to win
the 1876 election
Johnson’s Plan
1. gave amnesty to
many Confederate
officials
2. southern states
could form new
governments and
elect members to
the US Congress
3. each state had
to abolish slavery
and adopt the 13th
Amendment
Radical
Reconstruction
Plan
1. all southern
state governments
would dissolved or
disbanded
3. former
Confederates
could not vote or
hold political office
5. federal soldiers
sent to the South
to keep order and
act as police
4. divided the
South into
5 military districts
ruled by a
governor
Conditions in the
South improve for
African-Americans
Hayes ends Radical
Reconstruction
and the South
returns to many of
the same ways
before the Civil
War…….
Hayes betrays
African-Americans
and what was right
in order to win the
election….what a
poop!!!
2. southern states
must agree to the
13th, 14th and 15th
Amendments
Hayes promised to
remove federal
troops from the
South and
end Radical
Reconstruction if
southern
Democrats voted
for him……….
4. white males
must swear an
oath of loyalty to
the US
African-Americans
lose power………
