Reconstruction • The Good – Free public education for African-Americans and whites in the South – Most of the states of the former Confederacy, in order to regain admission to the Union, were required to ratify the Fourteenth Amendment – The innovation had the greatest impact on westward migration immediately after the Civil War transcontinental railroad – At the end of the Civil War, industry in the United States was booming as a result of war profits and business leadership Reconstruction Con’t • The Bad – As a result of the Civil War and Reconstruction, the South would finish the 19th century and enter the 20th century as economically depressed – The desire to establish military posts contributed to the forced removal of Native Americans from the Great Plains from 1867 to 1890 Reconstruction Con’t • The Ugly – Southern state governments tried to weaken President Johnson’s Reconstruction plan by passing black codes – Southern states were allowed to make their own decisions about segregation legislation therefore the 14th amendment was not successful implemented – Ku Klux Klan affect the South because it helped the reverse Reconstruction in the South
