Brief Summary of Unit (Including curricular context and unit goals):
In this unit, students will analyze and understand the major events, policies, figures, and
effects of the Reconstruction Era. They will analyze the different plans for
reconstruction that were proposed by President Lincoln, President Johnson, and
Congress. They will also learn about the Black Codes and Jim Crow Laws and what
life was like for the freed slaves during this time period. Finally, the students will
analyze the three reconstruction amendments and discover the effect they had on the
country.
The students will use all of this information and knowledge to come up with their own
plan for reconstruction following the major issues the policy makers faced. They will
then present their plan to the class and the class will decide what plan they like the most
using the voting procedure for the United States Congress.
