1928 (Before the Great Depression) 1929 –Start of Great Depression 1932 (During the Great Depression) World War II/Holocaust Notes The Nazi Party won only 12 seats in the Reichstag (Reichstag- the German version of our Congress) The U.S. stock market crashed in 1929 and started the Great Depression throughout the world The Nazi Party had 230 seats in the Reichstag and they were the largest political party (like our Democratic and Republican parties) Article Intro: 1939 Germany invades Poland to start WWII (The Soviet Union invades two weeks later – secret deal between Hitler and Stalin) WWII Overview 50 million people died in the war including six million Jews in the Holocaust “A Raw Wound” -WWI How Hitler comes to power – Double Whammy! -2 million Germans die -Treaty of Versailles - WWI Treaty of Versailles Great Depression Nazis do well in elections von Hindenburg names him chancellor (Hitler was not actually elected) “Hitler’s Spell” Hitler takes control Of the government Hitler and the Nazis become more popular Hitler tests Europe and the World “Another Hitler?” The Holocaust -Reichstag building is burned down(??) -German Congress silenced -Take away freedom of speech and other freedom -German people silenced -Other political parties arrested -opponents of the Nazis are silenced -von Hindenburg Dies (??) (Hitler has total control) -the president is silenced? -They clean up crime and put people back to work by violating the Treaty of Versailles (building up the army) -Nazi Propaganda persuades people (Hitler was a persuasive speaker) -The Nazis discriminate against the Jews (Nuremberg Laws) -Germany takes over Austria and then Czechoslovakia -Germany invades Poland -Jews were stripped of their property and freedom(Nuremberg Laws) -Nazis implemented the “Final Solution” -The main targets of the killing were the Jews (Six million Jews were killed out of eight million total in Europe) -Other targets of the Nazis were: Roma, disabled, gay people, resistance forces, Soviets, communists, Polish people and other Slavic people (Five million others) WWII -Hitler and the Nazis take over most of Europe -1941: Japan attacks Pearl Harbor and the U.S. enters the war (Turning Point) -1942-43: Battle of Stalingrad-Germany attacks the Soviet Union and looks like they may defeat the Soviets until the Russian winter stops the Germans at Stalingrad. The Germans are pushed back for the first time. (Turning Point) -WWII in Europe ends in April of 1945 and Hitler kills himself ***What Putin is doing in and around Russia today seems similar to things that Hitler did.
