Unit 1: Review Topic 1: Interaction Within an Ecosystem. Terms to know: Ecology, ecologist, adaptation, ecosystems, symbiosis, mutualism, parasitism, parasite, host, commensalism. Things to remember: Remember the four needs of all living things. Sample question: A symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits and the other suffers is called… Topic 2: Human Impacts on Ecosystems. Terms to Know: Natural Resources, DDT, Pesticides. Things to Remember AND sample questions: How do humans impact ecosystems? How has changes in the way humans gather food affected the environment. Topic 3: Environmental Choices. Terms to know: Sustainability, ecological footprint, three R’s, Things to Remember: Remember ways to reduce your ecological footprint. Remember how much it “costs” the environment for a fast food burger (p. 32). Sample Questions: List five ways to reduce your ecological footprint. Topic 4: How Organisms Interact Terms to know: Biotic, abiotic, niche, producers, consumers, herbivores, carnivores, predators, prey, omnivores, food chain, energy flow, food web, pyramid of numbers, biomass, scavengers, decomposers. Things to remember: Remember the differences between a food chain, a food web and a pyramid of numbers AND what the advantages/disadvantages are or each. Sample question: What is the difference between a scavenger and a decomposer? Topic 5: Cycles in the Environment Terms to know: Carbon cycle, water cycle (evaporation, condensation, precipitation, transpiration, ground water, run-off), pollution, pollutants, acid rain, pH, bioaccumulation. Things to remember: Be able to draw the water cycle and understand the carbon cycle (you wont be asked to draw it, but you will probably be asked to explain what it is) Sample question: Explain how bioaccumulation causes there to be more pollutants at higher levels in a food chain. Topic 6: Succession and change in Ecosystems Terms to know: succession, primary succession, secondary succession, biological control, introduced species, endangered species, extinct. Things to remember: Be able to explain how succession (primary and secondary) work. Sample Question: Give two advantages of biological control and two disadvantages. Topic 7: Environmental monitoring Terms to know: Ecosystem monitoring, indicator species, baseline data, permanent plots, environmental impact assessment. Things to remember: The four types of ecosystem monitoring Sample question: Explain environmental monitoring.
