Unit 14: Decolonization and Globalization
The Big Picture:
th
The end of the 20 century and the beginning of the 21st century presented a new set of global challenges. In the decades following
World War II, imperial colonies in Asia and Africa gained their independence. These new nations formed democracies and took
control of their own economic futures, but many nations faced problems associated with population pressure, education,
infrastructure, civil war, and the rise of military governments. While decolonization dominated Africa and southern Asia, China
experienced major changes after the death of revolutionary leader Mao Zedong. Under Deng Xiaoping, China’s Communist Party
relaxed strict socialist policies which allowed China’s economy to boom. Elsewhere in the world, corporations and trade
organizations became more internationally connected. Advances in technology sped up information allowing businesses
and governments to better function across continents. This globalization marked an important transition in the modern era. In the
21st century, much of history has been defined by global terrorism and the “Arab Spring,” the embracing of human rights and
democracy in the Middle East and north Africa. Issues that are current events today will soon be events in tomorrow’s history books.
