Alfred Russel Wallace

About him
Wallace was born in
Wales on January 8th
1823 and died at the
age of 90 on November
7th 1913.
He was a British
naturalist, explorer,
geographer,
anthropologist, and
biologist.

Wallace was married to
Annie Mitten (Wallace)
She lived from 18481913
Together they had three
children
- Violet Wallace
- Hebert Wallace
- William Wallace
Education
Wallace attended a free
grammar school
because of his ability to
pass a academic
selection test.
He did not attend
university
He studied and worked
in land surveying with
his older brother.

Before Wallace and Darwin developed the theory, most
people believed evolution was all a gods creation.
The Theory of Natural Selection changed the way
scientist think, then and now.
Contributions
On his own, Wallace
had the idea of
evolution by the theory
of natural selection

Charles Darwin’s work
in 1858.
Theory of Natural Selection
The Theory of natural selection is that in any
generation, some individuals are more likely to live and
reproduce than others.
There are factors to the theory that need to be proven
true to call it evolution. That factors are:
- Ability to reproduce
- Different characteristics
between individuals
- Gain characteristics from
parents (mutations & adaptations)

His Death & Memorial
By the end of his life ,
Wallace was known is
places all over.
He passed away in his
sleep on Nov 7th 1913
and buried Nov 10th in a
nearby cemetery
On Nov 1st 1915, a
medallion with his
name engraved was put
in Westminster Abbey
next to the memorial to
Darwin.
