For 1-10 define or tell what the following are and give 2 examples of each (you may have to write a sentence to
show the examples and you may need your own paper):
1. noun -- person, place, thing, or idea ex: teacher, city, fun
2. common noun -- any person, place, thing, or idea ex: man, store, dog, love
3. proper noun -- names a specific person, place, or thing ex: Mrs. Green, Ukrop’s, Cadillac
4. abstract noun-- a noun that cannot be detected with any of the 5 senses ex: beauty, freedom
5. concrete noun -- a noun that can be detected with any of the 5 senses (sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing,) ex:
dog, air
6. pronoun -- a word that replaces a noun ex: he, she, I, they, you, it
7. antecedent -- the word a pronoun replaces or refers to ex: The teacher gave her class a treat. The pronoun is
HER and the antecedent is TEACHERr ex: The dog ate its food. The pronoun is ITS and the antecedent is
DOG
8. adjective – a word that modifies or describes a noun or pronoun ex: the PRETTY girl, a RED car
9. noun used as adjective – a noun that is used to modify another noun becomes an adjective ex: BEAN soup,
ex: DOG food
10. proper adjective—a proper noun that is beign used as an adjective ex: CHRISTMAS parade
ex: APRIL showers
11. List the articles – a, an, the (these words are adjectives and always indicate a noun is coming)
ex: A student brought AN apple to THE teacher
12. List the demonstrative adjectives—this, that, these, those ex: this hat, those shoes
13. What is the difference between demonstrative adjectives and demonstrative pronouns? (they are the
same 4 words) Write an example sentence for each. –demonstrative adjectives are used WITH a noun, and
demonstrative pronouns replace the noun ex: This hat is pretty. (this is an adjective modifying hat) ex: This is
pretty. (this is a pronoun because it is replacing some noun)
14. What is nonfiction? – writing that is true and real
15. Tell how authors make nonfiction more interesting to readers Make it humorous
16. When reading, what do words written in BOLD print indicate to the reader? – bold indicates a headline, or
something important, or a new section
17. When reading, what do words written in italics indicate to the reader? – italics emphasizes, points out, or
can be used as a title in some cases
18. Number the steps of the writing process to put them in the correct order:

For 19-21 use context clues to figure the meaning of the underlined word. Write the meaning.
19. The lady could use her left hand to do anything that she could do with her right hand. She had been
ambidextrous ever since she was a child. – able to use both hands equally
20. The substitute left a note telling the teacher how garrulous the class had been. The teacher was angry
because she had warned the class about the talking several times. – talkative
21. The sun was shining and the day was beautiful. Everyone in class longed to be outdoors playing on the
unusually nice day in November. The teacher, however, had planned an afternoon of fun indoors—cupcakes,
popcorn, and a great movie. She left the decision up to the class: an afternoon of fun or go outdoors and play.
It was a tough decision! Most of the students were ambivalent and couldn’t decide. –not caring one way or
another
For 22-23 circle the nouns and underline the adjectives in the following sentences:
22. Tropical animals enjoy freedom by living in the wild, while zoo creatures endure years of being on public
display locked away in cages and enclosures.
23. The holidays are quickly approaching, and even though I am looking forward to Thanksgiving with
relatives, I really like seeing the Christmas parade!
For 24-26 circle the pronouns and draw an arrow from each to its antecedent. If the antecedent is not in the
sentence, write the antecedent on the line.
24. Mrs. Guempel told the students she wanted them to do well on their tests.
25. When Dad yelled at Sally about not doing homework, she became upset with him because she had done it!

For 27-28 circle the correct pronoun in the following sentences and on the line, explain WHY it is correct.
27. In the fall, most of the trees’ leaves will fall from (its, their) branches due to cold weather.
most is the antecedent and is plural so the pronoun must be plural
28. The dog’s food was missing from (its, their) bowl! Dog is the antecedent and is singular, therefore the
pronoun must be singular

29. These shoes hurt my feet. Adjective because it modifies the noun, shoes
30. Pink shoes are pretty, but I like these the best. Pronoun because there is no noun after it
