THAT ROYALS ARE RELICS
Good evening ladies, gentlemen and fellow debaters. Before I further our case I would
like to point out a few misleading arguments put forward by the affirmative team. … Our
first speaker talked from the political point of view and put forward … arguments
whereas I the second speaker will be talking about from the economic point of view. I
will be covering two main arguments. Firstly, I will be addressing how royals contribute
towards their country’s tourism revenues and secondly how royals are self-sufficient
financially and contribute positively towards their country’s economy. Now to my first
argument.
Royals make a huge positive contribution to tourism revenue. The assets and events
linked to their names draw in tourists from foreign countries and provide attractions that
can be proudly claimed as publicity materials. One of the prominent images we associate
with Britain/ One of the main reasons tourists choose to go to countries such as Britain is
because of the royal’s renowned and famed rich heritage and castles. Royal attractions
are regularly packaged and promoted for tourist consumption. Royals also provide
gainful employment though tourism. The influence of their contribution to tourism is felt
in different industries such as tourism advertising, its influence on trade, and economic
decisions which will have a lasting impact not only in the present but also for the future
generations. Castles such as Balmoral Castle owned by the royals attract a large numbers
of tourists. Royals add tourist appeal to Britain a lovely country, so rich in tradition.
Statistics show that in the year 2002 more than 24 million tourists visited Britain.
Furthermore, it was estimated that the tourist industry gained more than 11.9 billion
dollars. Link the stats in more with the royals, maybe? It’s also stated that most of these
tourists visit Britain to witness the castles owned by the royals as well as take a quick
glimpse at their large and spread out heritage. The royals themselves were a valuable
tourist attraction in the past and now they are not only tourist attractions but precious
prized enterties. Additionally, many argue that the royals are given millions of dollars
each year, well what about the hundreds of millions dollars royals attract into the country
through the tourists. next year are predicted to bring in millions of dollars in revenue to
our tourism industry. The Commonwealth Games that are going to be held in Melbourne
next year was opened by the queen in 1978 to allow more than 72 countries who were
under British Rule to participate. Although abundant numbers of people do actually come
to view the games many do come to observe the queen. These games are predicted to
bring millions of dollars of tourism revenue into the Australian economy, further proving
the economic value of the royals. Still to this day the royals are contemporaneously,
generally useful and are prized enterties. Royals have always and will always be the ones
who attract tourists into countries and contribute to the economy industry. The only
reason we can proud to stand here today and say that we are a strong economic country is
because of the royals themselves and the heritage they have preserved. Without them our
whole economic industry will crash. This statement is a bit extreme, because tourism is
only a small part of our GDP, and the Australian economy is not that drastically affected
by our colonial history in terms of tourism. Remember the topic is that royals in general
are relics, not just the British monarchy, so perhaps try and say something about how the
tourism revenue brought in by royals contributes to a significant part of the country’s
GDP. Therefore royals do make a huge positive contribution to tourism revenue.
My second argument is that royals are self-sufficient financially and actually generate
ample revenue to support themselves as well donate to charity purposes. In March 31st
2000 the profit gained by the Crown Estate crossed 139.9 million euros which was paid
to the Exchequer for the benefit of taxpayers. Good point. Perhaps emphasise this point a
bit more? This sum far exceeds the total cost paid for the royals. Further, during trips the
royals pay their own fees from their own purse. The royal collection consists of works of
art of all kinds. All costs, except for some building occupancy costs are met by the royals
themselves. The royal collection receives no funding whatsoever form the government or
the national lottery. Price Phillip is the only member of the royal family to receive an
annuity from the Civil list of 359,000 euros. The annuities of other members of the Royal
family are provided by the queen form her money. Moreover, the Prince of Wales derives
his income on which he pays tax. The royals actually generate enough money to support
their estates, art collections, heritage, travel expenses and expenditure without any help of
any sort of funding or tax payer’s money. Royals are not only self-sufficient but also
donate money to charity purposes. Take Diana for example – She devoted most of her life
donating money to different charities. She started of what was then a very small charity
and later as the years passed her involvement of donation to charities grew considerably.
Diana touched lives of many and EB sufferers have benefited immeasurably from her
practical care and concern. Princess Diana was involved with helping numerous charities.
When asked why she donated to charities she replied "There are many people in the
world who need to be loved and it’s the royal’s job to do it." All royals in the present are
following her footsteps and donating money to charities and making the world a better
place to live. As you see royals are self-sufficient and actually generate enough money to
support themselves as well as donate to charity purposes. Each day royals are making our
world a better place to live.
In conclusion I talked about two main arguments stating why royals are not relics. Firstly,
I mentioned how royals make a huge positive contribution to the economic climate of
their country. Secondly, I have explained how royals can provide for themselves without
needing any funding. On top of that they make a positive contribution charities around
the world and help raise global awareness of such issues. Royals are making our world a
better place to live, improving their countries economic status as well as providing for
themselves without us having to fund them in any sort of way. Reemphasise and restate
the main case line, that they are prized entities, etc. They are contributing to our world in
some or other way each day. Old money always gets new money.
