Energy Level Rules



1st energy level – maximum of 2 electrons
2nd energy level – maximum of 8 electrons
outside energy level - maximum of 8 electrons
Step4: Finally, place dots on the
energy levels to represent the
appropriate number of electrons
according to the rules stated in this
box.
Mg
Step 5:
 Print the element symbol
 Place dots for each “valence” electron around the
symbol. (Valence electrons are the electrons in the
outside energy level.)
Note: It is customary to place the dots in pairs around the
symbol.

Atomic Diagrams Assignment
Name
1. In the boxes below, draw a energy level diagrams for the following elements.
carbon
beryllium
neon
argon
phosphorus
fluorine
boron
hydrogen
sodium
aluminum
chlorine
silicon
nitrogen
sulfur
Your diagram must show the arrangement of all of the electrons in the atom. Print the element
symbol in the center of the diagram.
Example:
Mg
2. In the boxes below, draw electron dot diagrams for each of the elements listed in #1.
Print the element symbol in the center of the diagram.
