French Revolution
Causes of the French Revolution
1. Political: absolute Monarch - king of France ruled by “Divine Right” with
unlimited power. No free speech or press. The king could charge, try, and
punish without trial or jury.
2. Social: France was divided into 3 rigid, distinct classes called estates:
 1st Estate: clergy and religious leaders [ 1% of total population]
 2nd Estate: Land owners and nobility [ 2% of total population]
 3rd Estate: workers, merchants, poor [ 97% or total population]
3. Economic: The 3rd Estate paid almost ALL taxes. Land tax, church tax, salt
purchases, and feudal tax to lords and forced labor. The merchant class of
business professionals: were unable to make any profit because they were
forced to pay taxes and tariffs on goods.
Other Causes
1. The French merchant classes - Bourgeoisie were wealthy and wanted more
power from the nobles and king and less taxes.
2. French enlightenment philosophers: provided the powerful IDEAS of free
thought, basic human rights, and government reform.
3. [Influence of English and American revolutions: ☺☺☺☺☺] England:
developed a parliament in which power was SHARED with a king, the nobles,
and common people. America: The USA created the worlds first totally
democratic political system. Based on fundamental freedoms.
