John Adams: federalist becomes president, Thomas Jefferson: Republican - Vice President First ship of the US Navy is launched: United States 1797 Mr. Simon - World History French Revolution Causes of the French Revolution 1. Political: absolute Monarch - king of France ruled by “Divine Right” with unlimited power. No free speech or press. The king could charge, try, and punish without trial or jury. 2. Social: France was divided into 3 rigid, distinct classes called estates: 1st Estate: clergy and religious leaders [ 1% of total population] 2nd Estate: Land owners and nobility [ 2% of total population] 3rd Estate: workers, merchants, poor [ 97% or total population] 3. Economic: The 3rd Estate paid almost ALL taxes. Land tax, church tax, salt purchases, and feudal tax to lords and forced labor. The merchant class of business professionals: were unable to make any profit because they were forced to pay taxes and tariffs on goods. Other Causes 1. The French merchant classes - Bourgeoisie were wealthy and wanted more power from the nobles and king and less taxes. 2. French enlightenment philosophers: provided the powerful IDEAS of free thought, basic human rights, and government reform. 3.
