Our Growing Reference Sheet…
Product: The answer to a multiplication problem.
For example: In the problem 2 x 8 = 16, the product is 16.
Factor: A number that is multiplied by another number to create a product.
For example: 3 x 6 = 18.
3 and 6 are the factors; 18 is the product.
Multiple: The product of a given whole number and another whole number.
For example: If 4 is the given whole number, then 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 are the first five multiples of 4.
(4 x 1= 4; 4 x 2 = 8; 4 x 3 = 12; 4 x 4 = 16; 4 x 5 = 20)
Prime Number: A number that has only two factors, 1 and itself.
For example: 13 is a prime number.
13 has only two factors, 1 and 13. (1 x 13 = 13)
Composite Number: A number that has three or more factors.
For example: 12 is a composite number.
12 is the product of: 1 x 12, 2 x 6, and 3 x 4. 12 has 6 factors: (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12)
Square Number: A number that has a factor that is multiplied by itself.
For example: 9 is a square number.
9 is the product of 3 x 3
Some other square numbers include:
4=2x2
16 = 4 x4
25 = 5 x 5
36 = 6 x 6
If you draw an array of any of the above square numbers, can you see that the
length of the rows equal the length of the columns? How does this connect with
what you know about “shapes,” and specifically, squares? 
