Chapter 2 Vocabulary and Notes
1) prime numbers - A number that has ONLY TWO factors.
~the only even number that is prime is two.
2) composite numbers - A number that has MORE than two factors.
~Neither 0 nor 1 are prime or composite because they only have 1 factor
3) factors - A number that is multiplied by another number (For example: 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, and 20 are
factors of 20).
4) prime factorization - A way of expressing a composite number as a product of its prime numbers.
5) powers - numbers expressed using exponents
6) base number - the number that is going to be multiplied or used as a factor. (Hint this is the big
number)
7) exponent - indicates how many times the base is used as a factor. (Hint the small number).
8) squared - A number raised to the second power.
9) cubed - A number raised to the third power.
10) product - is the answer to a multiplication problem
11) powers of 10 – the number of times 10 is multiplied by itself.
12) compatible numbers –are numbers that are easy to multiply
13) Distributive Property – a property that states to multiply a number by a sum, you can multiply
each addend by the number and add the products.
14) Commutative Property – a property that states the order in which numbers are added does not
change the sum and that the order in which factors are multiplied does not change the product.
15) Identity Property – a property that states that the sum of any number and 0 equals the number and
that the product of any number and 1 equals the number.
16) Associative Property – a property that states the way in which numbers are grouped does not
change the sum or product.
