Lesson 1.1: Place Value through Millions
Concepts:
Place value helps us read numbers.
Place value can be used to write numbers in different but equivalent forms (Standard,
Expanded, etc.).
You can use place value blocks to write numbers in the thousands.
= 1,000
= 100
= 10
=1
Position tells the value of a digit. There are 10 digits (0-9).
Place value tells you how much the digit represents.
A place value chart can help tell the value of each digit in a number.

Commas and periods help you read and write a number.
A period is a group of three places.

Commas separate one period from another.
Zero is a place-holder.
Numbers can be compressed (put together) and decomposed (take apart) in different
ways, e.g. 4,572 = 4,000 + 500 + 70 + 2
