Name: ___________ Date: ___________ How Do Animal and Plant Cells Differ? Materials: Lugol solution Scissors Forceps Elodea leaf Beaker for water Plastic cup Toothpick 2 slides Microscope Eyedropper 2 coverslips Procedure for cheek cell: 1. Gently scrape the inside of your cheek with the toothpick and collect some cheek cells. 2. Smear the end of the toothpick on the surface of the slide so that it spreads the cells out in a thin layer. 3. Add a drop of iodine to the slide. The nucleus will appear dark brown, the cytoplasm light brown. 4. Observe the cheek cells under medium power, and then switch to high power. Make a drawing of the cheek cell as it appears under high power, following the guidelines for making a scientific drawing. Label the cell membrane, cytoplasm and nucleus. Cheek Cell - high power Procedure for elodea leaf cell: 1. Use a dropper to place a drop of water on a clean slide. 2. Cut the elodea leaf in half and, gently, using forceps, place the pointed end in the drop of water on the slide. 3. Observe and then draw the elodea leaf under medium and high power. Label the cell wall, chloroplasts, cytoplasm and nucleus 4. Do you see a current in the cytoplasm? _______ (Yes or no) 5. How many chloroplasts can you count in one cell? ______ chloroplasts. Cheek and elodea leaf lab (g) Elodea Leaf – medium power Elodea Leaf – high power Results and Conclusions 1. What similar structures did you find in the 2 cell types? List them. 2. What was different about them? 3. What substance gives chloroplasts their color? (Check in the book if necessary). 4. Write the function of the cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm and chloroplasts. Cheek and elodea leaf lab (g) Results and Conclusions 1. What differences did you find between the cheek cells and onion leaf cells? 2. What similarities did you observe between them? 3. Write the function of each structure you found in the cheek cells and the onion leaf cells. Cheek and elodea leaf lab (g) Cheek and elodea leaf lab (g)
