Define Agriculture Extension and state its role in rural economy, organization of agriculture extension in
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, role and responsibilities of agriculture extension worker, duties and responsibility
of agriculture extension workers in union council, maintenance of office and file record, supervision of
field workers and other staff, maintain receipt, dispatch register, daily diary register, dead stock and
consumable stock register, demonstration plot register and keep accurate records of receipt and
expenditure, obtain information on credit and financial matters, set out trial plots and use them for
demonstration and keep record of the results both with in the institute and on farm, take part in the
organization and teaching of course given at a farmer training center, assist in the organization of field
day in an Institute, use the media for extension methods, role of rural women in agriculture
development, agricultural Laws.
PRACTICAL:Visit a farm and discuss the farmer’s problems and tell them how the extension service can help to solve
their problems, write a report on farm visit based on student own observation and discussion with the
farmers, write an official letter to the farmer and higher authorities on extension matters, visit a
Government office to seek information about extension matters, organize and conduct a group meeting
of farmers, analyse problems raised in a group meeting, demonstrate improved practices by using visual
aids, visit a union council and later write a report on it, identify cooperative progressive farmers for on
farm demonstration and pay visit to them.

PLANT PROTECTION I

OBJECTIVE:
After completion of this course the trainee shall be able to:
(1) Identify plant pest.
(2) Know about the principles of plant protection.
(3) Practically apply/use of plant protection techniques.
THEORY:
Introduction, economic importance and scope of plant protection to farmers and
national economy, introduction to plant pest and diseases (insects, arachnids, nematodes, fungus, virus,
bacteria, weeds, plant parasite, vertebrates). Identification of plant pest and diseases. Main body parts
of insect/arachnids (head, thorax, abdomen & mouth parts), losses and damage caused by the pests
(different mode of damages), pest and diseases of Rabi crops, metamorphosis and its types. Integrated
Pest Management (IPM). Weeds importance and control, entomological industries, apiculture and
sericulture. Types of spray machinery and its uses.
PRACTICAL:
Different methods of injury by pest through different mouth parts and metamorphosis.
Demonstration of different types of spray machines. Preparation of plastic tunnels and visit to plastic
tunnel farms and green houses seed production. Visit of sericulture and apiculture places.

Theory of simple machines and the application to farm machineries, different systems of weight,
measures and familiar conditions with units of matric system, temperature and pressure on gases,
various tools of wood work, different tools (hand) for agriculture purposes at the farm, hand tools for
repair of agriculture machinery, basic information and performance, specification of different tractors,
recommend a make and proper size of tractor for given farm size requirements, different parts and
control of tractor identification and their functions, describe the different systems and their functions,
fuel system, lubrication system, cooling system, electrical system, ignition system, transmission system,
brake and hydraulic system, 10 hours (daily) maintenance and 50 hours (weekly) maintenance and
services, need for 125 hours, 250 hours and 500 hours services required for proper functioning and long
life for tractors, comparison between diesel and petrol engines.

OBJECTIVE:
After completion of this course the trainee shall be able to:
(1) To know about insect pests of crop, vegetables, fruit, store grain and house hold pests (2) the pest
control methods and pesticides application techniques
(3) Know about plant protection equipment.
THEORY:
Methods of pest control (cultural, biological, physical, mechanical, reproductive,
Legislative and chemical; Pesticides & their classification (insecticides, miticides, nematicides,
rodendicides, fungicides, bactaricides, seed dressers, herbicides (organic & in-organic), bio-pesticides,;
mode of action of pesticides, safe and effective use of pesticides; major pests of crops, orchards,
vegetables, stored grains, termites etc; main diseases of kharif crops, introduction and control of plant
protection equipments.
PRACTICAL:
Pest survey, pest scouting, losses due to pest or diseases in standing crops. Main insect
pest of kharif crops – sugarcane, rice, maize, groundnut, soyabean. Main insects of vegetables – potato,
tomato, peas, cauliflower, onion, garlic, main insect pests of fruit plants – citrus, apple, mango, guava,
peach, plum and apricot; field visits to identify the diseases of sugarcane, rice maize, groundnut,
soyabean, vegetable; collection of 20 Rabi & Kharif weeds of crops and vegetables; bait preparation for
rodents and seed treatment. Fumigation of storage bins/godown, fumigation techniques before and after
