Objective 2:
The Marshall Plan and the Berlin Airlift
A. Another Communist threat loomed over war-torn Western Europe. Communism could be
voted in power in Western European democracies because the democracies were
struggling to rebuild from the devastations of World War II. IN 1947, Truman’s
Secretary of State, General George Marshall, proposed the European Recovery Plan
or Marshall Plan. Complete a Document Analysis Chart on the teacher furnished
excerpt from his speech.
B. Write a qualifying statement concerning the below statements.
1. The USSR made a futile attempt to match the economic foreign policy of the US.
2. Konrad Adenauer’s West German Miracle was such a success.
3. The Marshall Plan benefited the United States politically and economically.
C. It is always confusing for students to distinguish the difference between the Soviet Union
and the Soviet Union’s Satellite countries. In order to understand the conflicts of the Cold
War in Europe you must understand the geography of each.
1. Define: Soviet Union
2. Define: Soviet Satellites
3. Map and distinguish the geographic difference in the two groups.
D. Toward the end of WWII, the geography of Germany was impacted by decisions made at
Yalta and Potsdam. Map the geography of Germany at the end of the war. Include the
city of Berlin. Be sure to include a thorough in-depth legend!
E. The Four Powers Agreements fell apart when the United States, Britain, and France
decide to pool their occupation zones together and form the Republic of Germany. The
Soviet reaction included the complete isolation of the Western half of the City of Berlin.
The United States led “West” decided try to save West Berlin with an “airlift.” Under an
original headline of the Berlin Crisis, write a thorough paragraph describing the cause,
course and results of the Berlin Airlift.

F. Twenty years later, in 1961, another crisis developed involving Berlin. Under an original
