6 DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DNA AND RNA
DNA
Contains the sugar deoxyribose
RNA
Contains the sugar ribose
Contains thymine
Contains uracil instead of thymine
Is a double stranded helix
Is a single strand
1 type of DNA
3 types of RNA:
m-RNA, t-RNA, r-RNA
DNA can’t leave the nucleus
mRNA leaves the nucleus
DNA is much longer
RNA is shorter strands
Can replicate itself
No replication
Types of RNA:
1. mRNA – messenger RNA; takes the “message” from the DNA into the
cytoplasm so it can be translated into a polypeptide chain (protein).
2. tRNA – transfer RNA; “transfers” specific amino acids to the
ribosome for the construction of the polypeptide chain.
3. rRNA – ribosomal RNA; involved with the production and maintenance
of ribosomes.
