LOW VOLTAGE ANTI-RESONANT AUTOMATIC CAPACITOR BANKS
THIS GUIDE SPECIFICATION IS WRITTEN IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS INSTITUTE (CSI)
MASTERFORMAT. THIS SECTION MUST BE CAREFULLY REVIEWED AND EDITED BY THE ARCHITECT OR THE ENGINEER
TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE PROJECT. COORDINATE THIS SECTION WITH OTHER SPECIFICATION SECTIONS
IN THE PROJECT MANUAL AND WITH THE DRAWINGS.
WHERE REFERENCE IS MADE THROUGHOUT THIS SECTION TO “PROVIDE”, “INSTALL”, “SUBMIT”, ETC., IT SHALL MEAN
THAT THE CONTRACTOR, SUBCONTRACTOR, OR CONTRACTOR OF LOWER TIER SHALL “PROVIDE”, “INSTALL”, “SUBMIT”,
ETC., UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED.
THIS SECTION IS WRITTEN TO INCLUDE THE 2004 MASTERFORMAT AND THE 1995 MASTERFORMAT VERSIONS. WHERE
APPLICABLE, THESE ITEMS ARE BRACKETED AND, IN EACH CASE, UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED, THE FIRST CHOICE
APPLIES TO THE 2004 MASTERFORMAT AND THE SECOND CHOICE APPLIES TO THE 1995 MASTERFORMAT.
NOTES TO USERS OF THIS SPECIFICATION:
1
NORMAL STEP SIZES UTILIZED AT VARIOUS VOLTAGES ARE LISTED BELOW:
a. FOR 208 VOLT SYSTEMS: 20 kVAR AND 40 kVAR.
b. FOR 480 VOLT SYSTEMS: 50 kVAR AND 100 kVAR.
c. FOR 600 VOLT SYSTEMS: 50 kVAR AND 100 kVAR.
d. OTHER VOLTAGE AND STEP SIZES ARE AVAILABLE.
NOTE THAT HAVING ONE SMALLER STEP IN A SYSTEM PROVIDES STEP RESOLUTION IN ACCORDANCE WITH THAT
SMALLER STEP. FOR INSTANCE, A 250 kVAR SYSTEM CAN BE CONSTRUCTED USING ONE 50 kVAR STEP AND TWO
100 kVAR STEPS BUT STEP SWITCHING RESOLUTION WILL BE 50:100:150:200:250. STEP SIZES IN ANY SYSTEM MUST BE
DESIGNED AS INTEGER MULTIPLES OF THE FIRST STEP TO ACCOMMODATE CONTROLLER PROGRAMMING. THE
EXAMPLE ABOVE HAS A 1:2:2 RATIO. STEPS SMALLER THAN THOSE LISTED ABOVE ARE POSSIBLE BUT NOT TYPICALLY
ECONOMICAL NOR NECESSARY TO MEET POWER FACTOR REQUIREMENTS IN NORTH AMERICA.
2.
NORMAL TUNING OF DETUNED SYSTEMS IS 4.2 X 60 HERTZ FOR NORTH AMERICAN VOLTAGES (480 VOLTS,
600 VOLTS). FILTER TUNING OF 3.8 X 50 HERTZ IS COMMON FOR 380 VOLT AND 415 VOLT SYSTEMS. WE DO NOT
RECOMMEND SPECIFYING HIGER TUNING POINTS WITHOUT A DETAILED NETWORK STUDY AS THE RISK OF FILTER
OVERLOAD INCREASES WITH INCREASING THE TUNING POINT.
CURRENT TRANSFORMER (CT) RATIOS COMMONLY AVAILABLE INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: 500/5, 800/5, 1000/5,
1200/5, 1600/5, 2000/5, 2500/5, 3000/5, 4000/5, AND 5000/5. CT RATIO IS DETERMINED BY THE CURRENT RATING OF
THE UPSTREAM SWITCHGEAR TO WHICH THE CAPACITOR BANK IS CONNECTED. FOR INSTANCE, A CAPACITOR
BANK CONNECTED TO A 2000 AMPERE RATED SWITCHBOARD WOULD REQUIRE A 2000/5A CURRENT
TRANSFORMER. CT SIZING IS NOT A FUNCTION OF THE SIZE OF THE CAPACITOR BANK OR THE FEEDER BREAKER
TO THE CAPACITOR BANK. NORMAL SPLIT CORE CT’S HAVE A 4 INCH (102 MM) BY 7 INCH (178 MM) WINDOW WHICH
IS TYPICALLY SUITABLE FOR SWITCHGEAR CURRENT RATING UP TO 4000 AMPERES; 4 INCH (102 MM) BY11 INCH
(279 MM) WINDOW CT’S ARE ALSO AVAILABLE FOR HIGHER CURRENT RATING SWITCHGEAR.
