The Economist Intelligence Unit reports that inward foreign direct investment (FDI) grew from US$50bn in
2013 to US$86.8bn in 2014. We expect inflows to drop to US$67.8bn in 2015 and to remain more muted in
2016-20, averaging US$58.3bn annually. The US remains the largest source of FDI for Ireland, accounting for
more than one out of every two FDI projects in the country in 2014.
The unemployment rate continued to fall and was 8.8% in December 2015, its lowest level since December
2008, when it stood at 8.6%. The jobless rate had skyrocketed in the aftermath of the financial crisis, peaking
at 15.1% in early 2012, up from 4.4% in 2005.
The Industrial Relations (Amendment) Act (No. 27 of 2015) was signed in July 2015 and went into effect in the
following month. It sets the registration of employment agreements between employers and trade unions
and governs remuneration and conditions of employment in individual enterprises. It also provides for a
new statutory framework for establishing minimum rates of remuneration, pension and sick pay.
