The UN's Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean reports that inflows of foreign direct
investment (FDI) to Nicaragua rose to US$840m in 2014, up 2.9% from 2013. According to latest available
data, the United States was the top contributor of FDI to Nicaragua in 2013, followed by Mexico, Venezuela,
Panama and Spain.
According to the 2014 edition of Climatescope, a yearly report published by the Multilateral Investment Fund
and Bloomberg, the US-based media company, Nicaragua was the seventh most attractive destination for
renewable-energy investment out of 26 Latin American countries. The report notes that US$129m was
invested in green energy in the country in 2013, down from US$292m in 2012.
In December 2014 an amendment to Law 822 went into effect, cancelling a scheduled reduction in the
corporate tax rate from 30% to 25% by 2021. The reform also modified the tax rates applying to interest,
dividends and royalties; tax residents face a 10% rate, while non-residents are levied at 15%. A flat 10% rate
had applied previously.
