In January 2016 the UN Security Council's five permanent members plus Germany lifted nuclear-related
sanctions on Iran's financial, energy, shipping and other sectors. The move came after the International
Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that Iran had fulfilled its commitments to dismantle key segments of its
nuclear programme, marking a turning point in Iran's relations with the global economic community.
The sanctions lift released frozen Iranian assets, some of which had been held abroad since the 1979 Islamic
Revolution. Not all of these assets will be liquidated with equal ease or speed. Indeed, as of March 2016 it
was expected that only US$32bn of the estimated US$100bn total will be released in the immediate term.
The sanctions lift by no means represents a windfall for Iran, and a number of sanctions-related restrictions
remain in place with the effect of blocking foreign investors (particularly Americans) from taking advantage
of new business opportunities in the country. Non-US entities also face constraints, especially if they rely on
business relations with US partners. US dollars still may not be used to conduct any transactions involving
Iran.
