8th Grade Science October 2015 Hello again parents and guardians! Important Dates: Thursday 10/15: Early Release: students dismissed at 1:45 Friday 10/16: OEA/NEA Day- No School for students! Monday 10/19: Non-Contact Forces Study Island Practice Test due by 10:00 PM for extra credit!! Tuesday 10/20: Non-Contact Forces Test *Review sheet below! Wednesday 10/21: 1st Quarter Grade Cards Available Wednesday & Thursday 10/21 & 10/22: Student led conferences! (to schedule, please CLICK HERE or call the main office at 797-6400) This year seems to be flying by, as we just finished the first quarter! Grade cards for first quarter will be available to you on Wednesday, October 21st. I also wanted to let you know that students are having a test on Tuesday, October 20th, over the three non-contact forces (gravitational, magnetic, and electrical) that we have been studying the past few weeks. I provided students with a review sheet in class (it’s bright orange), and have also provided a copy below. We will spend time on Monday reviewing for the test, but I highly recommend that students look over their notes, homework, and labs this weekend in order to prepare. Students may also use the online textbook as a resource for studying; the directions to access it are below. Finally, students may complete the Study Island “Non-Contact Forces Practice Test” online for extra credit, which is due by 10:00 pm on Monday, October 19th. The login information for Study Island is also found below. As always, if you have questions or concerns please feel free to E-mail me! Take care, Kylie Friday 10/23: No School Tuesday 10/27: The 2nd Current Event Article Analyses is due (worth 25 points) Go to: www.StudyIsland.com Username: StudentID#@wvl Password: the one on the students’ schedule How to Access the Online Textbook 1. 2. 3. 4. Go to www.ThinkCentral.com Click on the green “Science and Health” button on the left. Click on “Science Fusion” Enter the following: a. State: Ohio b. District: Westerville City Schools c. Non-Contact Forces Test: Tuesday, October 20, 2015 Non-Contact Forces What do all not-contact forces have in common? Gravitational Force What two factors affect the strength of gravity between two objects? Explain the difference between mass and weight. Know what would happen to each if you went to another planet or the moon. (Short answer question!) How does gravity affect the motion of objects? Why do objects in space orbit one another? (What force is involved?) Explain the “acceleration due to gravity” picture (apple falling from the tree or rock being dropped off the ledge) Magnetic Force What happens to magnetic force if you increase/decrease the distance between two magnetic objects? Where is a magnet the strongest? Where is it the weakest? Recognize the magnetic field diagrams for opposite poles and for like poles What happens when two like poles interact? What happens when opposite poles interact? Between what kinds of objects can magnetic force be exerted? Electrical Force What happens to electrical force if you increase or decrease the distance between charged particles? Recognize the electrical field diagrams for opposite charges and for like charges How do objects become charged? What happens to the number of electrons? What happens when 2 like charges interact? What happens when opposite charges interact? Between what kinds of objects can electrical force be exerted? Essential Vocabulary: (This is not a vocabulary test, but you should understand the following terms and be able to apply them!) Magnitude Force Newton Net Force Balanced Forces Unbalanced Forces Gravitational Force (Gravity) Air Resistance/Drag Magnetic Force (Magnetism) Poles: North and South Attract Repel Electrical Force Static Electricity Charge: Positive and Negative Electrons/Protons Contact Force Non-Contact Force Mass Weight Field Distance Gravitational Field Magnetic Field Electric Field
