Course Syllabus Department: Social Science Date: 10/31/12 I. Course Prefix and Number: CDC 102 Course Name: Concepts of Chemical Dependency I Credit Hours and Contact Hours: 3 credit hours and 3 contact hours Catalog Description including pre- and co-requisites: supporting data required for grade This course will study the nature of chemicals of abuse and their impact on the individual and society. This will include the major classes of drugs, their impact on the brain and body, why people use and how they become addicted. prerequisite of ‘C’ or higher. Topics covered in this class, in addition to those mentioned, will include laws regarding chemical use, toxicology, drug screening and its implication, limitations and reporting. One of the four hours of tobacco education required by OASAS is included in the course material. It is a prerequisite for CDC 103, CDC 115, CDC 200, CDC 210 and CDC 211. Relationship to Academic Programs and Curriculum including SUNY Gen Ed designation if applicable: This is the first course taken in the CDC curriculum and is a prerequisite for the rest of the program. Additionally this course would be appropriate to fulfill the requirement in the Physical Education curriculum and may be used as a general elective in other programs. II. Course Student Learning Outcomes: Students will demonstrate knowledge of drugs of abuse. Students will demonstrated development of presentation skills used to deliver educational content to a client population.
