Five Themes of Geography Geography is the study of the distribution and interaction of physical and human features on earth Location - Where is it? • Absolute – Can be given in latitude and longitude or an address – Latitude – read as north of the equator or south of the equator (0° Latitude) – Longitude – read as east or west of the prime meridian ( 0° Longitude) • Relative – How a place is related to the surrounding environment LATITUDE & LONGITUDE • Latitude range from 0° at the equator to 90° N or 90°S at the poles. • Longitude lines run parallel to the Prime Meridian and run through Greenwich, England. They range from 0° at the Prime Meridian to 180°E or 180°W. • They are read in degrees °, minutes ' , and seconds " •Example: Warner Robins, GA •32°37'14.988"N and 83°36'00"W Complete your paper – There are 45° between each line of latitude and longitude How did you do? Place – What is it like? • Physical features – Include things like landforms, climate, and vegetation • Cultural features – Built by men – Can be roads, dams, cities, buildings, etc CAN A PLACE CHANGE? REGION – How are places similar or different? • A region usually has more than one characteristic that ties it together • Examples: physical, political, economic, cultural Of what regions could Warner Robins be a part? Human-Environment InteractionHow do people relate to the physical world? • They change to adapt to the climate – Eskimo’s build igloos where there is no wood • They change to adapt to their needs – People build dams to provide power, stop flooding and increased trade opportunity How have we interacted to increase the size of Warner Robins? MOVEMENT – How do people, goods, and ideas move from one location to another? • Linear – how far • Time – how long • Psychological – how do people view distance How has modern technology changed the movement of goods and ideas?
