The Target Standard 3 Roads between different places connect people and ideas. Did You Know? • A place is a location that has a characteristic of its own. Dover is a small city. The characteristic that makes it different from others is the capital building. No other small cities in Delaware are capitals. Another characteristic is Dover Downs. (http://www.hotelsbycity.net/images/travelguides/usa/delaware/dover-big.jpg) Did You Know? • People move from one place to another. We call this movement migration. As people move, they carry their language and customs to the new place. People coming from England might call a sink a basin. People leaving America might still look for McDonald’s and be surprised when there are no hamburgers. Did You Know? • Roads leaving a large city have many lanes called super highways. They usually will go towards other urban areas. Smaller roads will branch off from the super highways leading to smaller cities. Single roads will lead to towns and villages. Did You Know? • Railroads and airplanes also connect places. These connections are the human and physical links between places. Railroads carry freight, taking the latest new cars to rural areas. Planes carry people from foreign countries bringing language and customs. Think About It • If you wanted to find the latest news about the Mideast, would you most likely find it from an urban or rural newspaper? Explain why. The Target Standard 4 Places that are similar in geographic landscape or culture make a region. Did You Know? • What are the states that touch the Atlantic Ocean? Each of the states is different and has its own characteristics. But they all have something in common-the ocean. Places that are different but mostly have one thing in common make a region. Did You Know? • There are many schools in Delaware. Each school has its own characteristics. Some schools belong to the Caesar Rodney School District. The places where Caesar Rodney students live would be a region. Did You Know? • Delaware has many farms. The farms that grow grains, fruits, and vegetables make a region. That region might be different than an area with lots of skyscrapers like Wilmington. Did You Know? • People can be part of many regions. We are in the coastal region, the Caesar Rodney region, and the suburban region. Did You Know? • Regions also have connections. Fruit and vegetable regions are close to big cities where lots of people will buy the produce. Suburbs are close to cities to provide a place for people to live who work in the city. Mountain regions need stores that sell skis for their tourists from other regions. Think About It • Why might a young girl from Mexico need to go to a bank when she moves to Delaware? Now You Know • Think about what you have learned and how your life is affected by geography everyday!
