Circulatory & respiratory systems Heart Blood vessels arteries > arterioles (away from heart) veins > venules (returning to heart) capilliaries blood Lungs Trachea Bronchi Bronchioles alveoli Circulatory & respiratory systems Work together to get oxygenated blood to the working muscles. Oxygenated blood is picked up at the lungs, it returns to the heart and is then pumped around body via the arterial system, delivering oxygen and nutrients as it goes. Deoxygenated blood (inc waste products such as carbon dioxide) returns to heart via venous system and is pumped back to lungs to pick up more oxygen. Better physical performance How efficient our respiratory and circulatory systems are at working together will affect our physical performance The more efficient our respiratory system is, the greater will be the volume of oxygen getting into our lungs, and from there into our bloodstream. The more efficient our circulatory system is, the greater will be the volume of this oxygen rich blood being pumped to our muscles and organs enabling them to work efficiently for longer. BOTH SYSTEMS CAN BE IMPROVED BY TRAINING Benefits of exercise to circulatory system Stronger cardiac muscle Increased stroke volume Increased cardiac output (stroke volume x beats per minute) Lower resting heart rate Benefits of exercise to respiratory system Improved gaseous exchange Increased vital capacity Increased tidal volume Improved O2 debt tolerance Short term effects of exercise breathing Pulse rate circulation Short term Effects of exercise muscles sweating Training effects General well being Rate of recovery More efficient heart Long term Effects of exercise muscles Body composition More efficient Circulatory system More efficient Respiratory system
