Professor Tracy Abram, MAIS, BS Objectives • Discuss functions of the respiratory system • List major organs of the respiratory system • Investigate and analyze internal and external respiration • Mechanisms that regulate respiration Inquiring Minds want to know… What is the function of the respiratory system? Respiratory System Functions: Distributes air Exchanges gasses Effective Filterer Dynamic Warmer Super Humidifier Structural Plan Figure 14-1 p. 363 Respiratory Organs: Nose-olfactory cells for sense of smell Larynx- voice box Pharynx- throat Trachea-windpipe Bronchi Lungs ***Tube with many branches of alveoli**** Alveoli Circulation capillaries Alveolar sac Passive Transport Diffusion: responsible for the gas exchange in the respiratory system. Respiratory Tracts Upper Respiratory Tract Lower Respiratory Tract Nose Trachea Pharynx Bronchi Larynx Lungs Nose Pharnyx: Throat Larynx: Voicebox Trachea: Windpipe Bronchi, Bronchioles, & Alveoli Figure 14-7, page 370 Cellular Respiration When humans breathe, laugh or talk, we release carbon dioxide. This process is called cellular respiration. In cellular respiration, humans take in food and oxygen and release carbon dioxide and water to produce energy. Respiration= C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6O2 (oxygen)-----------> 6CO2 +6H2O + energy Breathing mechanics Inspiration Inhalation- moves air into the lungs Expiration Exhalation- moves air out of the lungs Diaphragm: muscles separating the abdomen from thoracic cavity Figure 14-11 page 376 Respiratory Quiz for you!
