What advantages did the North have in their military strategy? • More people to fight • Anaconda plan – to surround and crush • Naval blockade – to block supplies and money from the South • Cut off South by taking control of the Mississippi River • Total war (Sherman’s March to the Sea) • South – simply played defense What is Habeas Corpus and what is its significance to the Civil War? • the right of someone to appear before a judge to determine if he is being imprisoned lawfully. • Relates to the Civil War because Lincoln suspended the right of Habeas Corpus to that he could hold people of MD & DE against their will to keep those states from seceding What were some of the things that soldiers did when they were NOT at battle? • they were at camp 50 days to every 1 day in battle. They occupied their time playing games, writing letters, singing, acting, hunting, fishing, playing sports, reading…etc What were conditions like in camp for the soldiers? • The camps were dirty and they had poor hygiene. Tents were pitched next to latrines, bathed in their drinking water. This spread disease often. What was the significance of the battles of Antietam and Gettysburg? • Antietam and Gettysburg were the only two attempts of the Confederate Army to attack the North, rather than play defense. They were unsuccessful at both attempts and lost 1/3 of their army. After Gettysburg they only fought a defensive war.
