The Defeated South
Q: Based upon your observations of the map below, how were
the North and the South effected differently as a result of the
Civil War?
A: Because the majority of battles took place in the South, many
Southern houses, farms, bridges, and railroads were destroyed.

time after the
Civil War when
the South was
rebuilt.
The federal program
to bring the seceded
states back into the
country.

Problems
faced by Southerners
during Reconstruction:
Millions of
freed slaves
needed
housing,
clothing,
food, and
jobs.
Many had no
education.
1. Freed slaves
have nowhere to
go.
Confederate money had
no value; therefore,
banks closed.
Harsh feelings between the
Northerners and Southerners
existed from the war.
There were harsh feelings on both sides.
Railroads, bridges, plantations,
and crops had been destroyed.

The effects of the Civil War on the South:




Destruction of Southern farms and crops
Freed slaves without a home, clothes, or
education
Money was worthless, so banks closed
Harsh feelings between Northerners &
Southerners
Plans for Reconstruction
Americans could not agree on how to bring
the South back into the Union.
Some wanted to use Reconstruction to
punish the South; whereas others wanted to
make it easy for Southern states to rejoin.
President Lincoln did not want to punish the
South. He said, “With malice [meanness]
toward none, with charity for all … let us
strive [try] to finish the work we are in, to
bind up the nation’s wounds …”
Lincoln planned to let the defeated states
set up new state governments and rejoin
the Union quickly.
Many people disagreed with Lincoln,
especially Republicans who wanted to
change the South.
Lincoln and Congress never had a chance
to reach an agreement.
On the evening of April 14, 1865, President
Lincoln was assassinated while attending a
play at Ford’s Theater
Lincoln’s assassination shocked the nation.
He had become a hero to many people and
his death filled them with sadness. They
would miss his leadership during the
difficult years of Reconstruction.
Why is Reconstruction
necessary?
Our country needed to be
reunited and the South needed
to be rebuilt.
The MAIN goal is to unite our
country.
