The Classical Period
When was this historical period?
1750 - 1820
Facts
• The symphony became a popular musical
form.
• This period called for balance, contrast, and
uniformity – in art, music, etc.
• The American & French Revolutions (1775
& 1789) affected art and politics.
• The most impressive instrumental sound was
that of the pianoforte, now popular
throughout Europe.
• The Industrial Revolution began and
continues to impact the world.
Instruments a
1. The piano (pianoforte)
is a stringed instrument
that is played by
depressing keys that
cause hammers to strike
tuned strings and produce
sounds. This hammering
technique was innovative
because it allowed for a
dynamic range (unlike the
harpsichord).
Instruments b
2. The string quartet is
established in a tradition
that first appeared
during the 18th Century
and remains for many
music-lovers the
pinnacle of all classical
music. It is made up of
two violins, a viola, and
a cello.
