Cell Transport
* Moving substances (such as food, water, waste, and oxygen and CO2) in and out of cells through the cell membrane
* There are 2 different types of Cell Transport
1. Diffusion
2. Active Transport
How most materials move in and out of cells
Type of transport that requires energy
to move large substances across a cell
membrane through a carrier
Passive Transport
Examples of Diffusion:
Type of diffusion that is energy-free.
1.
2.
Red blood cells move oxygen from
lungs to all parts of the body
For example, the movement of food or
sugar across the cell membrane
Osmosis
Type of passive transport that
moves water across a cell
membrane
For example, in plant cells,
osmosis keep plants from wilting
because it causes water to flow
into the cell.
If soil is dry, water will leave the plant
by osmosis. This causes a plant to wilt
and eventually die.
One-third of all the cell’s energy is
used to transport substances this way
