Analogy Activity
What is analogy?
a similarity between like features of two
things, on which a comparison may be
based: the analogybetween the heart a
nd a pump.
Analogy Activity
•
•
•
•
Work in groups of 3 (assigned).
Think of an analogy for each cell part. The analogy
can either represent the function or the structure.
Create slides for your project. Send your project to
the wikispaces project platform.
Structures you must have an analogy for:
(1) Cell wall
(2) vacuole
(3) Chloroplast
(4) cell membrane
(5)nucleus
(6) cell sap (7) cytoplasm
Still lost?
Here are some examples
Cell membrane
• Analogy : Doors
• Function : Controls
what goes in and
comes out of the cell
Cytoplasm
• Analogy : Space within a
house
• Function : Where
chemical reactions of
the cells take place
Nucleus
• Analogy : ‘Brain’ of the
cell
• Function : Controls the
cell’s activities
DNA
• Analogy : cookbook
recipes
• Function : Contains the
genetic information of
cells
Cell walls
• Analogy : Walls of
an apartment
• Structure : Thick
and strong
• Function : Maintains
the shape
Chloroplast
• Analogy : Stove
• Function : Use light
energy to make food
Large Vacuole
• Analogy : Water-filled
bottle
• Function : Stores water
and makes the cell
turgid (firm)
What happens when plant cells are not
turgid (firm)?
Plants wilt. But
recovers when
you water
them.
