Propaganda Propaganda Definition: • Propaganda is information aimed at influencing people’s views and actions. Propaganda appeals to emotion rather than intellect. Propaganda Techniques: • Bandwagon- People are encouraged to follow the crowd or join a group. • Example: Everyone in Columbia is behind Jim Smith for mayor. Shouldn’t you be part of this winning team? Propaganda Techniques: • Testimonial- Endorsement by a wellknown, respected person. Testimonial • Example: Subway uses Michael Phelps to promote their healthy food option. Since Phelps is a well known and respected Olympian, and clearly must keep a healthy diet as an athlete, he will likely earn Subway a good reputation. Propaganda Techniques: • Plain Folks- A person pretends to be one of the “common people.” • Example: After a morning speech to wealthy Democratic donors, Obama stops by McDonald’s for a burger, fries, and photo-op. Propaganda Techniques: • Transfer- This technique involves making an illogical association between one thing and something else that is generally viewed as positive or negative. • Example: The American pioneers worked hard because they cared about the future. If you care about the future of your family, then see your agent at Pioneer Insurance Glittering Generalities • Broad, vague statements which sound good Glittering Generalities • Sarah Palin was asked what specific skills she would bring to the White House to “mitigate that concern” of her perceived lack of foreign policy experience. "you know I think that I am prepared, …. I'll be ready. I have that confidence. I have that readiness and if you want specifics with specific policy or countries, go ahead. You can ask me. You can play stump the candidate if you want to. But we are ready to serve." Propaganda Techniques: • Name-calling- Giving the opposing person, group, or product a bad name, image, or reputation instead of discussing facts (also, character assassination and ad hominem argument) Name-Calling • Example: In a campaign speech to a logging company, the Congressman referred to his environmentally conscious opponent as a "tree hugger."
