Attention Deficit Disorder By: Morgan Barnes History of ADD • Known as the history of the 90’s • It was not until 1980 that ADD was named – Before that it was called “Morbid Defect of Moral Control” 1902 – Then in 1922 “Post-encephalitic Behavior Disorders”. – Then it was called “Minimal Brain Dysfunction” in 1960 – “Hyperkinetic Reaction” in 1968 What is ADD? • A disorder associated with low attention spans and hyperactivity. Characteristics of ADD • Inattention – Difficulty organizing task – Inability of staying on task – Lacks the ability to transition – Misplacing things – Hard time remembering tasks Characteristics of ADD Continued • Hyperactivity – Fidgety – Can not stay seated – Girls tend to talk a lot – Boys tend to be more aggressive – Difficulties listing to others – Gets distracted when reading a lot Characteristics of ADD Continued • Impulsiveness – Speaks out – Doesn’t like to take turns – Need to do high stimulus activity Treatment for ADD • • • • Not curable Medicine Counseling Behavior modification Medicine Ritalin – Affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. – Main drug used – Other medications are also used but the same results are accomplished.
