ENDOCRINE SYSTEM ENDOCRINE SYSTEM A SYSTEM OF GLANDS THAT PRODUCE CHEMICAL MESSAGES CALLED HORMONES WORKS WITH THE NERVOUS SYSTEM TO KEEP BODY RUNNING RIGHT HORMONES HORMONES HELP TO REGULATE BODY ACTIVITIES CONTROL THE RATE AT WHICH ACTIVITIES OF ORGANS AND TISSUES OCCUR SPEED UP SLOW DOWN TURN ON TURN OFF ENDOCRINE vs. EXOCRINE Endocrine System: secretes hormones that are carried by the blood Exocrine System: produce chemicals (not hormones) which move through ducts in organs Ex. Salivary glands (spit) Eye Ducts (tears) Sweat Glands (sweat) ENDOCRINE GLANDS Hypothalamus: At the base of the brain Control all the other glands Pituitary Gland: Has 2 parts-front and back in the center of the skull Stimulates growth of bone and sex organs Controls blood pressure and metabolism ENDOCRINE GLANDS Thyroid: Parathyroids: Located at the front of the neck Controls how fast food is burned up in the body on either side of thyroid Controls calcium levels Thymus: Located behind the sternum Develops the immune system ENDOCRINE GLANDS Adrenals: Located above the kidney They release hormones to regulate stress responses Ex. Adrenaline Pancreas: Controls sugar levels Produces insulin ENDOCRINE GLANDS Ovaries & Testes Control secondary sex characteristics Ex. Estrogen and Testosterone NEGATIVE FEEDBACK Negative Feedback Mechanism: automatically controls the hormone levels in the body Production of one hormone is controlled by the amount of another hormone in the blood
